In the wake of repeated rainfall-induced waterlogging, the National Highway near NHPC Boniyar has once again turned into a stream, severely affecting daily commuters and raising serious concerns among the residents of the area. Civil society members have strongly urged the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla and Beacon authorities to address the issue on an urgent basis by constructing a proper drainage system.
Locals report that even a brief spell of rain results in severe water accumulation, blocking the road and halting the movement of vehicles. This disruption affects not only the daily lives of residents but also employees, students, and transporters who use the route regularly.
Ghulam Nabi Sheikh, a prominent civil society member from Boniyar, recalled a tragic incident from a few years ago where a local resident lost his life due to the waterlogged road. “We don’t want to lose more lives. This issue needs serious attention. Constructing a proper drainage system here is not just a demand it’s a necessity,” he said.
Residents are particularly concerned about the presence of electric poles along the sides of the road. When the road gets submerged in water, it becomes extremely risky for vehicles and pedestrians alike to pass through, especially near live electric lines, increasing the threat of electrocution or accidents.
The people of Boniyar have been raising this demand for years, but it continues to remain unresolved. With the rainy season already underway, they have appealed to Deputy Commissioner Baramulla and Beacon authorities to take immediate steps for permanent redressal.
A long-pending demand, the construction of a proper drainage system along this stretch of road could bring much needed relief and prevent further mishaps. The residents remain hopeful that the administration will act without delay.
