In a bid to revolutionize the agricultural landscape of District Poonch, the Agriculture Department, under the visionary leadership of Chief Agriculture Officer (CAO) Mr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, has been taking a series of groundbreaking initiatives to uplift farmers and ensure sustainable farming practices. With a relentless focus on improving the lives of farmers, the department has implemented several government schemes and innovative projects aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring economic growth within the region.
Mr Rakesh K Sharma, who has been at the forefront of this transformation, has played a pivotal role in the effective implementation of various government schemes such as Kisan Credit Cards (KCC), PM-KISAN (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi), Soil Health Cards, and the formation of Farmers’ Producer Organizations (FPOs). These initiatives have helped farmers gain access to financial support, soil health information, and collective marketing opportunities. Additionally, the department has focused on introducing innovative farming models such as Mushroom cultivation, Apiculture (beekeeping), Organic Clusters, and Integrated Farming System (IFS) models, which have the potential to diversify farmers’ income streams and improve overall agricultural sustainability.
In the past couple of years, the Agriculture Department has placed significant emphasis on ensuring the availability of essential agricultural inputs, including seeds and fertilizers, to keep farming operations running smoothly. The department’s efforts have led to a steady supply of high-quality seeds and fertilizers, helping farmers avoid disruptions and maintain consistent production levels.
Under the guidance of Mr Sharma, the Agriculture Department has strengthened the infrastructure for seed distribution across the district. A robust network of agricultural seed stores has been established, each catering to the needs of multiple Panchayats. This extensive distribution network ensures that farmers in remote areas can easily access the seeds they require, thus promoting efficient agricultural practices and maximizing productivity. Moreover, the department has introduced farmers to new tools and equipment at subsidized prices through Trade Fairs and Kisan Melas (farmers’ fairs), which are organized regularly to promote modern farming techniques and innovations.
Another major initiative undertaken by the Agriculture Department has been the promotion of mass awareness regarding ongoing farmers’ welfare schemes. Mr. Sharma has urged officers and field staff to engage with farmers at the grassroots level, ensuring that they are well-informed about the various government schemes available to them. This proactive approach has significantly enhanced the outreach and effectiveness of these welfare programs, empowering farmers with the knowledge and resources needed to improve their livelihoods.
The efforts of the Agriculture Department in Poonch have not gone unnoticed. The farmers of the region have expressed their appreciation for the initiatives and the tangible impact they have had on improving agricultural practices and boosting incomes. By focusing on sustainable farming models, improved infrastructure, and financial support, the Agriculture Department of Poonch is laying the foundation for a prosperous and self-sufficient agricultural community in the district.
As the department continues to innovate and introduce new measures for farmers’ welfare, it remains committed to its goal of transforming District Poonch into a hub of agricultural excellence, where farmers thrive and contribute to the region’s economic growth.
