The Department of Social Forestry, Block Handwara and Kupwara, in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC) Handwara, observed Chinar Day with a large-scale plantation drive aimed at promoting environmental awareness and conservation.
The event was led by Senior Trade Union Leader, National Secretary and President J&K Trade Union Coordination Centre, Mr Syed Ghulam Rasool Geelani along with Muzaafar Manzoor Inayati—Range Officer (RO) Handwara, Abdul Rehman Raina—–Range Officer Kupwara, Block Officers, Forest guards and front line workers.
Besides this, Principal GDC Handwara and faculty members also participated in the event. As part of this initiative, several Chinar saplings were planted within the premises of participating institutions.
Speaking on the occasion, Senior Trade Union Leader, Syed Ghulam Rasool Geelani underscored the historical and ecological significance of the Chinar tree in Kashmir’s landscape. He urged students to take an active role in environmental conservation, emphasizing the need for afforestation and sustainable ecological practices.
The Principal of GDC Handwara highlighted the responsibility of the younger generation in safeguarding the regions natural heritage. He lauded the efforts of the Social Forestry Department in fostering awareness about the importance of Chinar trees and ensuring their preservation for future generations.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from students, professors, and forest officials—–all united in their commitment towards environmental preservation. Participants pledged to nurture the newly planted saplings and contribute to the broader cause of green conservation.
Observed annually on March 15, Chinar Day serves as a vital reminder of the cultural and ecological significance of the Chinar tree, an enduring symbol of Kashmir’s heritage. The Social Forestry Department reaffirmed its commitment to conducting similar initiatives, reinforcing the need for community-driven conservation efforts.
