Despite the infusion of crores of rupees into the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) aimed at addressing the water supply crisis, the most fundamental necessity—water—remains conspicuously absent from the pipelines in many areas of Poonch. While substantial funds have been allocated for the project, locals continue to endure severe water shortages, raising serious concerns about the effective implementation and transparency of the scheme.
The situation has prompted widespread frustration as contractors involved in the project appear to be reaping the financial rewards, but the public remains desperate for a reliable water supply. In several instances, exposed pipelines, rather than being properly buried underground as per standard procedures, have been found, further questioning the integrity and quality of the work done under the mission.
Despite clear and visible lapses in the execution of these water schemes, the concerned department has remained eerily silent, offering no explanation for the delay or the visible shortcomings. The gap between funds spent and the tangible benefits reaching the public paints a troubling picture of mismanagement and oversight.
The core question echoing among residents is, if money can flow so effortlessly, why can’t water? This disparity raises alarm bells about the priorities of the authorities involved and the accountability mechanisms in place, or the lack thereof.
As the locals continue to struggle, the hope for accountability seems distant. Will this project be yet another example of misplaced priorities and failed governance, or will the authorities take urgent steps to rectify the situation and deliver on their promises to the people?
The ongoing crisis serves as a stark reminder that no amount of financial investment can substitute for good governance and effective implementation of essential public services. Only through accountability and transparency can the residents of Poonch expect to see the benefits of the Jal Jeevan Mission—clean, reliable water flowing through their taps.
