In a significant move towards promoting environmental consciousness and infrastructure development in far-flung areas, Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Dr. Gh. Nabi Itoo, inaugurated a Mega Plantation Drive at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Behnipora Rajwar, Handwara.
The drive was organized in collaboration with the J&K Social Forestry Department, District Kupwara, Range Handwara. The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, civil society members, and government officials.
Dr. Itoo was accompanied by Joint Director Hakeem Tanveer, Chief Education Officer Kupwara Mehraj ud Shah, District Education Planning Officer Mohd Iqbal Shah, Tehsildar Zachaldara Syed Basharat Hussain, Range Officer Handwara, EJCC Leader Gh. Rasool Geelani, ZEO Handwara, ZEO Rajwar, among others.
As part of the plantation drive, Dr. Itoo personally planted a Chinar sapling within the school premises, symbolizing growth, longevity, and the cultural heritage of Kashmir.
A large gathering of parents, civil society members, and PRI representatives added to the grandeur of the event, expressing strong community support for such developmental initiatives.
A key highlight of the day was the cultural and environmental awareness program presented by students. The program featured impactful skits and performances, organized under the guidance of NSS Unit Head, Pir Nisar Ahmad, who was appreciated for his efforts in engaging and inspiring the students.
To encourage student participation, Dr. Itoo awarded a cash prize of ₹5,000 to the students who presented the best skit on plantation and environmental awareness.
During his address, Dr. Itoo acknowledged receiving a detailed memorandum from local residents and parents regarding the developmental needs of the institution. He responded with a firm assurance.
I personally commit to giving 100% to ensure that all genuine demands of this institution are fulfilled at the earliest.
He extended his gratitude to the J&K Social Forestry Department for their valuable collaboration and also commended the school administration for their proactive role in organizing such an impactful event.
In addition, Dr. Itoo praised the R&B Division Handwara, Sub-Division Rajwar headed by the AEE Arif Banday, and the concerned contractor for their swift and efficient construction of a two-storied classroom building.
He remarked:
InshaAllah, we will open this building very soon after 100% completion. This will provide our students in this far-flung area with a better learning environment and modern classroom facilities.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Itoo expressed his intention to revisit the institution in the coming months to review ongoing developments and remain actively connected with the school and its community.
