Amid soaring temperatures in the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday said that the government is actively considering advancing the summer break for schools due to the ongoing heatwave.
Speaking to reporters, Itoo confirmed that school timings have already been revised to provide relief to students. “In light of the heatwave, we have changed school timings. We are also deliberating an early summer break because students are facing severe discomfort in classrooms,” she said.
On Thursday, the minister had indicated that a 10-day summer break was likely to begin from July 1, with a possibility of extension depending on prevailing weather conditions.
According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar recorded the hottest day of the season on Thursday, with temperatures soaring to 35.2 degrees Celsius, significantly above normal.
The Education Department is expected to make a formal announcement on the break soon, based on further weather assessments and consultations with health and academic experts.
