The Grand Mufti of Jammu & Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, has strongly condemned derogatory remarks made by an influential individual against the revered Islamic figure Ameer Muawiya (RA).
Terming the remarks as deeply unfortunate, the Grand Mufti stressed that such crass comments are both historically inaccurate and potentially divisive for the Muslim community.
Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam clarified that Ameer Muawiya (RA) had no involvement whatsoever in the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and the Ahle Bayt at Karbala. “It is historically established that it was only after the death of Ameer Muawiya (RA) that his son, Yazeed, committed the heinous act of killing Imam Hussain (AS) and the other members of Ahle Bayt. How can we hold a father responsible for something his son did after his passing?” he questioned.
Drawing a historical reference, Grand Mufti said that Prophet Nuh (A.S.) urged his son to board the Ark, warning him not to be among the disbelievers during the great flood. His son refused, saying he would take refuge on a mountain. Prophet Nuh (A.S.) told him that no one could be saved from Allah’s command except those granted mercy. A wave separated them, and the son drowned. “This is to say that lineage and family ties hold no weight before Allah, faith and obedience are what matters. A righteous father like Prophet Nuh (A.S.) could not save his own son because salvation is personal; each soul is accountable for its own belief and choices,” Islam remarked.
The Grand Mufti cautioned that while scholarly debates and historical discussions are always open for intellectual engagement, dragging such sensitive topics into public discourse irresponsibly only serves to deepen sectarian divides and sow discord among the followers of different schools of thought.
“Such provocative statements do nothing but play into the hands of those who seek to create rifts within the Muslim Ummah,” he said. “We must exercise utmost wisdom and restraint, and avoid making any remarks, whether in speeches or statements, that can potentially harm the unity of Muslims or disrupt communal harmony.”
The Grand Mufti in the meantime urged all community leaders and public figures to act responsibly and foster an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
