For the first time, India is playing a key role in setting global telecom standards, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Thursday.

He said this shift is being driven by national initiatives such as Anusandhan (research), Atmanirbharta (self-reliance), Make in India, and Make for the World.

During his one-day visit to Bengaluru, Scindia met members of the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) and addressed researchers, industry leaders, and global partners, outlining a comprehensive roadmap for India’s leadership in next-generation 6G technology.

“For the first time in history, India is playing a seminal role in setting global telecom standards. This is a shift powered by PM Narendra Modi’s vision of Anusandhan, Atmanirbharta, and Make in India and Make for the World,” Scindia said.

“India aims to contribute 10 per cent of global 6G patents, backed by Rs 239 crore in R&D funding for 111 projects,” an official statement quoted him as saying.

Scindia noted that 99 per cent of mobile phones are now manufactured domestically, and that the country has achieved 60 per cent import substitution in telecom equipment.

He emphasised that the indigenous development of 4G and 5G technology stacks has positioned India as a frontrunner in telecom innovation.

“The Bharat 6G Alliance, comprising over 80 members and seven expert working groups, has emerged as a platform for innovation and international collaboration,” he added.

Scindia likened the Alliance’s collective capability to “a million graphics processing units (GPUs) put together.”

In an interactive session, he urged all stakeholders to take ownership of the 6G mission, proposing a three-to four-year roadmap with monthly targets and biannual reviews.

He stressed that B6GA must act as an ecosystem builder to help transform India from a knowledge hub into a global telecom superpower.

This was Scindia’s second meeting with the Alliance, following the first joint session of all seven working groups in September 2024. (PTI)
