Srinagar, Dec 28 TRK News:- A thick layer of fog covered much of Kashmir, including Srinagar, during severe cold wave conditions on Thursday.
According to a meteorological department official, Srinagar experienced a low of minus 3.3°C, compared to minus 2.6°C the previous night, registering 1.2°C below the normal for this time of the year in the summer capital of J&K.
Most areas in the Valley, including Srinagar, witnessed fog again, causing reduced visibility and slowing down traffic.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 3.8°C, down from minus 3.2°C the previous night, with the temperature being 1.5°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 5.44°C, compared to minus 4.6°C the previous night, showing a deviation of 0.2°C below normal for the renowned resort in south Kashmir.
Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.0°C, down from minus 2.2°C the previous night, with the temperature exceeding normal by 0.7°C for the location.
Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.3°C, compared to minus 4.2°C the previous night, indicating a deviation of 1.8°C below normal.
Gulmarg, the official said, registered a low of minus 2.6°C, down from minus 2.8°C the previous night, with the temperature being 3.6°C above normal for the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir.
Jammu recorded a minimum of 5.8°C, down from 7.6°C the previous night, and it was below normal by 1.6°C for the winter capital of J&K.
Banihal recorded a low of 9.2°C, Batote 6.2°C, and Bhaderwah 2.0°C.
The Kashmir valley is currently in the ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day harsh winter period ending on January 30, followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd’ from January 30 to February 19, and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ from February 20 to March 1.
The weatherman has forecast generally cloudy weather with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches during the next 24 hours.
“Generally dry weather with moderate to dense fog over Central Kashmir, Plains of Baramulla, Ganderbal, and Pulwama districts is expected until December 31,” the meteorological official said.
However, he added that there is a possibility of light snow over higher reaches during the evening/night of December 31.
From January 1-2, the weather is expected to be dry, with generally cloudy conditions and light rain/snow anticipated at “isolated” places on January 3-4.
