Kashmir continues to experience colder nights and warmer days, with a noticeable drop in minimum temperatures and a significant rise in daytime temperatures, officials said.
The night temperature in Srinagar and other major weather stations of the Kashmir Valley continued to plummet and recorded below freezing point, while the day temperature witnessed a significant rise as Srinagar recorded a maximum of 13.3 C on Thursday with bright sun appearing during the day, presuming a summer-like atmosphere.
The maximum temperature recorded on Thursday across all the weather stations of the valley was 3 C to 7 C above normal.
The 40-day-long harshest part of the winter, “Chillia Kalan,” will end at the end of January.
The minimum temperature recorded during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday at Srinagar further dropped and recorded a low of -3.3 C against the -2.0 C the previous night, and this was still 1.0 C below the average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during the period.
Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district continued to remain the coldest place, with the minimum temperature further slipping to -8.5 C against the -7.5 C the previous night. This was 0.1 C below the normal for the famed ski resort during this period of the season.
Pahalgam also dropped to a low of -7.0 C against the -5.6 C the previous night. This was 0.1 C below normal for the tourist spot of South Kashmir during the period.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway recorded a low of -2.5 C against the -2.6 C a day ago, and it was 1.8 C above normal for the gateway to Kashmir during the period, the Met office said.
Kokernag in south Kashmir had a low of -1.5 C against the -1.6 C recorded the previous night, and it was 2.2 C above the average for the picnic spot during the period.
Kupwara plummeted to a low of -4 C against the -2.2 C the previous night, and this was 1.3 C below normal for the frontier district of north Kashmir during this period of the season.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has forecast dry weather across the region until January 28, with the possibility of very light rain and snow at isolated locations in Jammu and Kashmir today, as well as between January 29 and 31.
