Despite being located in a far flung location, the villagers of Lagama have set an outstanding example of mutual harmony & co-existence based on unity, tolerance and understanding, even when the entire valley was under turmoil. Located on Baramulla – Uri Road amidst breathtaking natural landscapes, Lagama village has been a testament of togetherness and the triumph of humanity. The village, comprising of diverse population, including individuals from various ethnicities, religions and cultural backgrounds has fostered an environment where differences are celebrated and respected.
Despite facing turbulent times in the valley the people of Lagama village have managed to transcend the chaos and create a cohesive society rooted in empathy, compassion, and peaceful coexistence. The villagers embrace each other as family, offering support, solace, and a safe space for all. They actively engage in interfaith and intercultural exchanges, organizing events and festivals that bring the entire community together. These occasions serve as a powerful reminder of the richness that arises from diversity and the bonds that can be formed through shared experiences. The village elders, elected representatives and community leaders work hand in hand to foster a harmonious environment where everyone feels heard, valued and included & people from all background & religion live in peace & harmony. As quoted by Mr Bharat Kumar Sudan, Municipality President from Lagama, “The harmony between all communities of Lagama has existed since 1947. Indian Army has extended all possible support during India-Pak wars & in routine life. The illustration of communal harmony in Lagama was witnessed when Pandu Temple in Lagama was inaugurated by Maulana from Daralum, Lagama”. Talking to another resident of Lagama, Ms Bisma said that “Hindu & Muslim community live with peace & respect for each other. Major festivals like Eid & Deepawali are celebrated by all communities by visiting each other & taking part in the festivities”. Another resident Mr Mohammad Shafiq, teacher from Govt Girls High School, Lagama mentioned that “The students & faculty in the school are from all religious backgrounds. We all have been working together with harmony & there has never been any dispute between communities. Indian Army has provided much needed Desktops & Computer Lab to the school through Sadhbhavana project & other assistance as & when required”. Mr Dharampreet Singh, student from Lagama, quoted that “There is peaceful co-existence of Hindus, Muslims & Sikhs in Lagama village which can not be described in words. The harmony between all communities has always flourished in the village”.
Lagama village represents a glimmer of hope & remindes us that despite the challenges that may surround us, communal harmony can be nurtured and sustained, creating a brighter future for all. The village serves as an inspiring model of peace for the nation at large.
