The people of Mendhar and Mankote in Poonch district are calling for the inclusion of the historic Pothi Shrine on the state’s tourism map, recognizing its potential as a cultural and spiritual landmark. Located atop a scenic hill in Simkan village, Mankote Tehsil, the shrine has been a revered site for locals for decades, possibly dating back to pre-1947.

Speaking about the significance of the shrine, octogenarian Mohammad Bashir, a resident of the area, shared, “The shrine has been here for generations, and it has been a place of great reverence for people from all walks of life. From this hill, we can clearly see the Sundan Hill in Pakistan, and with the naked eye, we can observe the activities taking place there,” he explained.

The shrine is believed to be the burial site of a saint who, along with his sister, is said to have arrived from Punjab many years ago. Locals recount that the saint, renowned for his miraculous abilities, used to live beneath the earth. One of the notable relics at the shrine is a stone believed to bear the impressions of the saint’s hand and foot.

Despite the shrine’s location in a region often caught in the crossfire of tensions between India and Pakistan, locals emphasize its extraordinary resilience. “Although the area is in the firing range of Pakistan, this shrine has remained untouched by any shelling or gunfire, even as surrounding areas suffer heavily,” said Bashir.

The natural beauty surrounding the shrine adds to its allure, with breathtaking views of the valley and the nearby landscapes. Social worker and former Panchayat member, Ch. Makhana, expressed his belief that the site could become a major tourist attraction if it were developed. “The Pothi Shrine, with its historical and spiritual significance, coupled with the scenic beauty of the hilltop, has immense potential. If the Department of Tourism takes an interest in developing this site, it could become an ideal location for tourists,” Makhana stated.

It is worth noting that another significant religious site, the ancient Pracheen Ramkund Temple, is located on the same hill. According to local legends, this temple was constructed by the great Pandavas, adding an additional layer of cultural and religious heritage to the region.

The locals are hopeful that with the right support from the authorities, both the Pothi Shrine and the Ramkund Temple could be integrated into the state’s tourism circuit, bringing attention to the region’s rich spiritual heritage and natural beauty.
