Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has written to Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, urging him to raise the growing issue of Muslim victimisation in the upcoming Parliament session.
In her letter, Mehbooba referred to key issues like the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and other security matters that are expected to dominate the session. She requested the INDIA bloc, especially the Congress, to ensure that the concerns of the Muslim community are not ignored in national discussions.
She expressed serious concern over the treatment of Muslims in the name of identifying “Bangladeshis” and “Rohingyas,” saying they are being pushed into desperate situations. Citing media reports, she noted that some were even forced into the sea in attempts to expel them from India.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to Assam, she said the large-scale demolition of Muslim homes there was deeply troubling.
She also raised alarm over the ongoing survey in Bihar, saying it appears to be another effort to “dispossess, disempower, and disenfranchise Muslims.”
Mehbooba reminded Rahul Gandhi that Muslims who stayed in India during Partition did so because they trusted the Congress Party’s secular leadership from Mahatma Gandhi to Jawaharlal Nehru. That legacy, she wrote, now rests with him to protect.
She pointed out that when Hindus are targeted in countries like Pakistan or Bangladesh, the Indian government strongly reacts. But when Muslims are targeted within India, there is silence driven by fear.
As a leader from one of the few Muslim-majority regions that chose to join the Indian Union, Mehbooba said she feels helpless at times. She placed hope in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and urged him to speak up for a community that is being pushed to the margins of society.(KNS)
