In a notable shift in local governance, Nazir Ahmed Khan has been removed from his post as Chairperson of the District Development Council (DDC) Budgam after a no-confidence motion against him was unanimously passed by council members.
The motion, brought forward by thirteen DDC members on February 29, 2024, accused Khan of failing to convene council meetings for over a year and alleged widespread administrative negligence during his tenure. The issue eventually reached the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, which on March 29 directed the Deputy Commissioner of Budgam to take necessary action within two weeks.
Responding to the court’s directive, the Deputy Commissioner convened a special session of the DDC on April 7. All 13 signatories to the motion voted in favor, leading to Khan’s removal. This marks the first successful no-confidence vote against a DDC chairperson in the region since the councils were established.
Following the session, council members thanked the High Court and the Deputy Commissioner for ensuring transparency and due process in the matter.[KNT]
