Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Dr. G.N. Itoo, on Sunday underscored the importance of seeking prior permission for school excursions, including picnics, in light of a recent tragic incident that claimed the lives of two college students.

Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Itoo expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate accident involving students from Government Degree College Sogam, who lost their lives in a road mishap at Wodhpora while on their way to a picnic.

“Picnics are an important part of student life, but safety must always come first,” Dr. Itoo said. “No school shall organize a picnic without obtaining proper permission from the concerned Zonal Education Office, Chief Education Office, or the Directorate. Local authorities should also be informed wherever necessary.”

He stressed that all school outings must include adequate escort staff, and extra caution should be exercised in transport arrangements. “Our department will soon issue a formal circular to ensure these guidelines are implemented across all institutions,” he added.

Reiterating the department’s commitment to student welfare, Dr. Itoo said, “While schools deserve such recreational opportunities, it is our responsibility to make sure every measure is taken to ensure students’ safety, keeping in view the concerns of parents.”

Dr. Itoo also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for peace to the departed souls.
