The passing of Qari Muhammad Iqbal on May 7, 2025, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. A remarkable individual, Qari Iqbal’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to faith and humanity. Born into a noble and illustrious family known for its strong religious values, Qari Iqbal’s spiritual growth was nurtured by his father, Pir Ali Bakhsh, who aspired for him to become a devoted servant of faith, serving humanity beyond religious or national boundaries.
Qari Iqbal’s journey began at a tender age, when he was enrolled in a religious school, where his innate devotion to God and piety flourished. He pursued his religious education with zeal, studying at Jamia Qasim-ul-Uloom Sairi Khwaja Poonch, a renowned institution in the border district of Poonch, and later graduating from Jamia Shasthiya-ul-Uloom in Akkalkoa, Maharashtra, in 2003.
As a respected Hafiz of the Quran, Qari Iqbal’s recitations were marked by tenderness, captivating audiences and inspiring deep devotion. His melodious and pure voice had a profound impact on those who listened to him. Beyond his exceptional talent, he was known for his kindness, compassion, and selflessness.
Qari Iqbal’s dedication to serving the Quran and propagating Islamic teachings earned him a teaching position at Jamia Zia-ul-Uloom in Poonch shortly after graduation. For years, he selflessly served the institution, inspiring thousands of students across Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir with his guidance and wisdom.
Tragically, Qari Iqbal’s life was cut short when a mortar shell from the Pakistan side struck Jamia Muttakh’s new building, causing a massive explosion that damaged the roof and walls. Qari Iqbal, who was resting in his room after Fajr prayers, was seriously injured along with four students. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries at Poonch hospital, attaining martyrdom.
Qari Muhammad Iqbal’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and inspired. His devotion to faith, humanity, and the Quran is a testament to the power of selfless service and the impact one individual can have on the world. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him, and may his sacrifice inspire future generations to follow in his footsteps.
