Maybe, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. But what if darkness is now your forever companion and there is no end to the tunnel! There is no darkness in the North East! Sun goes to sleep early and wakes up early! That is what the officers men from Assam Rifles do! They are awake 24×7…………Only the faces of men change but the aim is one, get the people of North East closer to the great Nation ‘India’!
Honestly speaking the people of North East have seen some dreadful sequences!
-But the Assam Rifles have held them together!
-By the way the Assam Rifles has had a long and huge history therefore culture is unique!
-Lt General ViKas Lakhera acknowledges the fact!
-A defining figure from North East India who dedicated his life to national unity and integrity is Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the first Chief Minister of undivided Assam. His efforts were crucial in ensuring that Assam remained an integral part of the Indian Union during the tumultuous period of partition in 1947.
-Here is the story of his dedication to national unity:
-The Fight Against Separation (1946–1947)!
-Following the announcement of the Mountbatten Plan, there was a strong push to include the province of Assam into the newly created East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), primarily driven by the Muslim League and supported by some within the Congress leadership who were willing to accept this to appease the League.
-Battling Two Fronts: Bordoloi had to fight both the British, who were pushing the grouping plan, and the Muslim League’s demand to make Assam a part of East Pakistan.
-The Lone Stand: Despite immense pressure, Bordoloi displayed unwavering determination, arguing that Assam’s cultural and political identity was rooted in India.
-Gandhian Support: Bordoloi, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, compelled the Congress Working Committee to change its mind. Along with a few close aides, he ensured that Assam was not included in Group C (which would have merged it with Pakistan), effectively keeping it in India.
-A Champion of Integration and Rehabilitation
-Following Independence in 1947, Bordoloi faced the monumental task of managing a border state facing massive influxes of refugees.
-Rehabilitation: He worked tirelessly to rehabilitate millions of refugees who had escaped the violent, newly created East Pakistan, fostering stability in the region.
-Democratic Values: He worked to ensure that the indigenous people of Assam, including scheduled castes and tribes, were integrated into the mainstream development process, ensuring their rights were protected under the new Indian Constitution.
-Legacy and “Lokapriya” Title!
-For his selfless service to the nation and his role in ensuring the territorial integrity of the Northeast, he was fondly given the title ‘Lokapriya’ (beloved of the people).
-Bharat Ratna: Recognizing his massive contribution to keeping the Northeast united with the rest of India, he was posthumously awarded the highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999.
-Architect of Modern Assam: Bordoloi’s dedication to democracy and cultural harmony continues to be a guiding light for national unity in the region.
-While Bordoloi worked on the political front, Rani Gaidinliu (1915–1993) from Manipur, known as the “Daughter of the Hills,” fought against British colonial rule to protect her people’s cultural identity. After spending 14 years in prison for her defiance, she continued to fight after 1947, not against the Indian government, but against secessionist movements, advocating for the integration of the Zeliangrong Nagas within the Indian Union.
-And now:
