Op Sarp Vinash: Romeo Force is renowned for conducting “Op Sarp Vinash,” a landmark counter-terrorism operation in Jammu & Kashmir.

-The Romeo Force is a specialized counter-insurgency division of the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR), raised to combat militancy, maintain internal security, and protect border regions in the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) union territory. It has served for decades, particularly in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch, often called the Pir Panjal region.

-Key Historical Facts and Roles:

-Formation: Raised on September 1, 1999, at Rajouri Fort.

-Area of Responsibility: Primarily operates in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, focusing on the hilly terrain that acts as an entry point for militants.

-Operational Focus: Counter-insurgency (CI) operations, preventing infiltration across the Line of Control (LoC), and neutralizing militant modules.

-Performance Metrics: As of 2018, the force had neutralized over 1,458 militants and recovered huge caches of arms and ammunition since its inception.

-Structure: It operates under the control of XVI Corps (Nagrota) of the Indian Army.

-Key Operations & Incidents:

-2003: Played a significant role in Operation Sarp Vinash to clear terrorists from the Hill Kaka area of Poonch.

-2024-2026: Intensified operations to counteract renewed insurgency attempts in the Rajouri-Poonch belt, using modern technology to track militants.

-2026: Conducted high-altitude operations (above 13,000 feet) during extreme winters, such as during the Chillai Kalan phase in the Pir Panjal ranges.

-“Operation Sadbhavana” and Community Impact:

-Beyond combat, Romeo Force plays a vital role in building community relations through “Operation Sadbhavana” (Goodwill Mission):

-Support for Nomads: Provides blankets, tents, and medical aid to nomadic tribes (Gujjars and Bakarwals) during their seasonal migrations.

-Education and Skill Development: Sets up community halls, schools, and conducts training in welding, plumbing, and mobile repair.

-Medical Relief: Organizes medical camps, particularly for victims of cross-border shelling.

-Sacrifices and Awards:

-The Force has faced significant casualties in the line of duty. As of 2018, 308 personnel, including 37 officers, had laid down their lives. The force has been recognized with 993 gallantry and distinguished service awards, including the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakras.

-The Indian Army’s Romeo Force (part of the Rashtriya Rifles) is conducting intense, proactive counter-terrorism and search operations in the high-altitude Pir Panjal ranges of Poonch, J&K. Operating above 13,000 feet, troops are braving heavy snow and extreme cold to sanitize challenging terrain.

-Key aspects of Romeo Force operations:

-Targeted Operations: Intensified surveillance and search operations aim to eliminate terrorists and neutralize threats along the Line of Control.

-Operational Area: The force is actively searching in areas like Jhullas and Mangnar in the Poonch district.

-High-Altitude Challenges: Troops are conducting “high-altitude patrols” in areas with heavy snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and rough terrain.

-Coordination: These operations are frequently carried out in coordination with the SOG Poonch, CRPF, and local intelligence inputs.

-Security Review: Top Army brass, including the GOC White Knight Corps, regularly review the operational readiness and strategies of the Romeo Force in the region.

-These efforts are part of a broader, long-term strategy to ensure security and prevent infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.

-Heroic Combat Against Terrorists

-The Battle of the Nallah (2025โ€“2026): In a high-stakes search operation, a team of Romeo Force soldiers, including Subedar Sanjeev Kumar, spotted terrorists in the heavy snow of the Pir Panjal ranges. During the chase, the soldiers stumbled directly into a hiding spot of five terrorists in a nallah (stream). Despite the tactical disadvantage, the squad engaged in a point-blank battle, resulting in all five terrorists being taken down.

-Sacrifice of the Brave: During this operation, the unit showed exceptional bravery, with soldiers like Havildar Davendra Singh and Paratroopers Bal Krishan, Amit Kumar, and Chhatrapal Singh making the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

-9 Para SF Operations: The Romeo Force has collaborated with elite units like 9 Para SF. General Gagandeep Bakshi noted a team of 9 Para SF under his command that, alongside Romeo Force operations, managed to eliminate 11 terrorists in consecutive days.

-Emergency Assistance: The force has been credited with organizing local Iftar parties to foster community relations and providing medical and educational aid, as noted in the “Service Before Self” initiative.

-The Romeo Force personnel are referred to as “eternal sentinels” of the Indian Nation, protecting the nation in some of its most difficult terrain.

Stories of women helping or working alongside the Indian Armyโ€™s Force Romeo (Counter Insurgency Force) in Rajouri and Poonch focus on themes of resilience, economic empowerment, and community partnership. These interactions highlight a collaborative effort to bring stability and development to border villages, often involving women becoming self-reliant or supporting the army’s outreach programs.

-Stories of Collaboration and Empowerment

-The Women Bakers of Lam: Four womenโ€”Meenakshi Rani, Tarjinder Kaur, Priya Saini, and Seema Deviโ€”from Lam village, only 4 km from the Line of Control (LoC), set up a successful bakery with the help of the Army and the Aseem Foundation. They became role models for women’s empowerment, with two of them being felicitated by the Chief of Army Staff in 2021.

-Educational Support at Harni: Romeo Force conducted “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” awareness lectures at the Government Higher Secondary School in Harni, Mendhar, motivating young girl students to pursue higher education and build a stronger bond with the Army.

-Veer Nari Outreach: Romeo Force conducts ongoing outreach to Veer Naris (war widows) and mothers of martyrs in Tain, Rajouri, providing support, care, and assistance, recognizing their sacrifices and strengthening their connection with the community.

-Vocational Training in Rajouri: As part of International Women’s Day celebrations, the Army, through its various divisions in Rajouri, has provided sewing machines to local women to encourage financial independence and sustainable livelihoods.

-Humanitarian and Security Support Roles

-Medical Emergency Support: In Jan 2026, Romeo Force personnel from the Gambhir Army Camp responded within 20 minutes to a request for blood, saving a woman named Gudi from Banna, Reasi, who was in a critical condition at GMC Associated Hospital, Rajouri.

-Emergency Assistance at Keri: The Romeo Force previously provided timely medical aid and evacuated an 18-year-old woman, Halda Begum, from a remote border village (Soanti) to a health center, saving her life.

-Community Intelligence and Safety: While not naming specific individuals, reports highlight that women and local community members in remote border areas work closely with the army, sharing intelligence and helping maintain surveillance to ensure regional security.

-These initiatives illustrate that the collaboration between local women and Force Romeo is a two-way street: the army provides security and development support, while the women become pillars of stability, entrepreneurship, and community monitoring in border villages.

-Now to the final lines:

A remarkable story of a brave woman from Rajouri who has exemplified bravery in a new, modern context is that of Simran Bala, an Assistant Commandant in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who made history in 2026. Unlike historical stories of bravery often involving direct, momentary conflict, Simran Balaโ€™s story is one of breaking structural, institutional barriers and leading with authority in a male-dominated field.

-The Story of Simran Bala

-Background: Hailing from a border village in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri district, her life was shaped by the challenges of living near the Line of Control (LoC), where cross-border shelling was a reality.

-The New Context of Bravery: On January 26, 2026, Simran Bala became the first woman officer from Rajouri district to lead an all-male CRPF contingent at the Republic Day Parade on Kartavya Path, New Delhi.

-Breaking Barriers: Leading over 140 male personnel, her achievement highlighted a shift in leadership within India’s security forces, proving that women from remote, conflict-ridden areas can excel in the highest levels of national security.

-Operational Role: Besides her ceremonial feat, she is currently posted with the ‘Bastariya’ Battalion in Chhattisgarh, actively conducting anti-Naxal operations, showcasing her dedication to serving in high-pressure, dangerous environments.

-A Legacy of Service

Simran Bala represents the third generation of her family to don a uniform, continuing a tradition of national service with a new, empowered perspective.

-Other notable examples of brave women from Rajouri in new contexts include:

-Bhawana Kesar: The daughter of a tailor who became the first woman from Nowshera, Rajouri, to clear the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Service (Judicial) examination in 2024.

-Tahirah Rehman: The first woman from Rajouri to be selected as a flying officer in the Indian Air Forceโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..And the legacy continues! Hats off to the Romeoโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.!
