Debasish Chakraborty, a sergeant who works in the Cyber Cell, East Division of the West Bengal Police, and his wife Debarati, had plans to celebrate their son’s fifth birthday. However, he was hit on his eye during the Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’s ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ protest march on the same day.

Debasish, along with others, was with the tag team deployed for duty at 11 Furlong Gate. They were re-deployed and while they were moving towards Strand road via Kingsway (Eden Garden), a number of protesters including both female and male students threw brickbats on their vehicles. One of the bricks hit Debasish’s eye directly. His left eye was severely traumatised and he has been under treatment at Shankar Nethralaya.

Debasish called his wife Debarati to tell her he was being taken to the hospital. Debarati rushed to the hospital and saw how her husband’s eye was hurt.

The police department may take him to Hyderabad as doctors have told them that there might be a problem with his vision.

His wife Debarati Chakraborty said, “I don’t know what happened. He is very cool headed. His eyes have been damaged badly. The department is planning to take him to Hyderabad. With their duty, they are always fighting with risk.”

“A lot of people say a lot of things about police, but our husbands take a risk and work. We haven’t come from any other planet, the police also have family, children. We are also human beings. A lot of people blame the police for things, now that my husband has been injured badly, who should I blame? I know it’s his duty but what if he has permanent vision problem,” Debarati questioned.

She also told that she is confident that he will recover soon and she hoped that he will get back his vision and again be on the road for his duty.

Debasish’s 5-year-son has still been thinking that his father has gone to duty and will come back soon. A young woman in her thirties, Debarati has been in the hospital, trying to ensure her husband’s vision remains safe. The state government and the police department have been helping her in every way, but she wears a nervous look and has been constantly praying for his well-being.

The Kolkata Police, meanwhile, have filed a case against protesters over Debasish’s injury. Kolkata Police Commissioner also met Debasish in hospital. The entire police department is concerned about his well-being, sources said.

At least 25 police personnel were injured along with a number of protesters.

The police fraternity are also in shock over the condition of Debasish Chakraborty. Police office Aloke Sanyal shared on Facebook that Debasish was his colleague. He called for justice for Debasish. (News18)
