From Sketches to Masterpieces
In the heart of Srinagar’s historic Eidgah neighborhood, 20-year-old artist Fazila Jan is making waves in Kashmir’s art scene. What started as simple sketches in school notebooks has now evolved into stunning murals and paintings that blend tradition with modernity. Now, she’s embarking on a new artistic journey—mastering the timeless craft of calligraphy.
A Childhood Passion Turned Profession
Fazila discovered her love for art in eighth grade, finding joy in sketching landscapes and portraits. “I would lose track of time while drawing—it felt like my own language,” she recalls.
The COVID-19 lockdown became a turning point. With schools shut and streets silent, she dedicated herself to painting, murals, and mixed-media art, learning from online tutorials and experimenting with new styles. Her home soon became a personal gallery of colors, creativity, and expression.
From University to the Art Scene
After completing her 12th-grade exams, Fazila took a bold step and enrolled at the University of Kashmir’s Department of Music and Fine Arts. Here, she received formal training, refining her skills while exploring the history and impact of art.
Her talent soon gained recognition beyond the classroom. She showcased her work at various competitions and exhibitions, including the Lal Ded Art Festival in Srinagar and inter-college art contests. “Seeing people pause to admire my art in public spaces—it’s surreal,” she says.
A New Love: Calligraphy
While Fazila excels in murals, portraits, and abstract art, calligraphy has now captured her heart. Inspired by the beauty of Arabic and Persian scripts, she aims to merge traditional calligraphy with Kashmiri artistic elements.
“Calligraphy isn’t just writing—it’s an art form, a rhythm of ink and devotion,” she explains. “I want to incorporate it into murals that celebrate Kashmir’s rich heritage.”
She plans to apprentice under master calligraphers to perfect her craft, envisioning murals where Mughal-era scripts meet Kashmiri chinar leaves and alpine landscapes.
A Vision for Kashmiri Art
Fazila’s journey is fueled by passion and perseverance, despite challenges like limited exposure to global art trends and scarce resources. Yet, she remains undeterred.
“Kashmir is a land of artistry—our crafts, landscapes, and stories deserve a global stage,” she asserts.
Through every stroke of her brush and every flourish of ink, Fazila Jan is not only shaping her own future but also preserving the artistic legacy of her homeland.
