Qari Mohammad Iqbal’s father, Pir Ali Bakhsh, nurtured his son’s spiritual growth, aspiring for him to become a devoted servant of faith, dedicated to serving humanity beyond religious or national boundaries.
Consequently, Qari Mohammad Iqbal was enrolled in a religious school at a tender age, where his innate devotion to God and piety flourished.
Qari Mohammad Iqbal hailed from a noble and illustrious family known for its strong religious values. Growing up in a spiritually enriching environment, his family earned respect and influence in the community. He pursued his religious education with zeal, starting at Jamia Qasim-ul-Uloom Sairi Khwaja Poonch, a renowned institution in the border district of Poonch. He later graduated from Jamia Shasthiya-ul-Uloom in Akkalkoa, Maharashtra, in 2003. As a respected Hafiz of the Quran, his recitations were marked by tenderness, captivating audiences and inspiring deep devotion.
Qari Muhammad Iqbal’s melodious and pure voice captivated audiences during Quran recitations. Beyond his exceptional talent, he was known for his kindness. His expertise and dedication earned him a teaching position at Jamia Zia-ul-Uloom in Poonch shortly after graduation. For years, he selflessly served the Quran and propagated Islamic teachings. His impact was profound, with thousands of students across Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir benefiting from his guidance.
On May 7, 2025, Qari Muhammad Iqbal was resting in his room after Fajr prayers, preparing for class. Meanwhile, students were heading to their classrooms when a mortar shell from the Pakistan side struck Jamia Muttakh’s new building, causing a massive explosion that damaged the roof and walls.
The intense explosion shattered windows and tore apart walls of nearby buildings. Qari Mohammad Iqbal’s room, located nearby, was severely damaged, leaving him seriously injured along with four students. The incident caused widespread panic within the institution. The injured were rushed to Poonch hospital, where Qari Iqbal ultimately succumbed to his injuries, attaining martyrdom.
