Jammu and Kashmir is likely to experience a shift in weather conditions starting July 5, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting intermittent rainfall over the next few days.

The forecast is particularly relevant for areas along the Amarnath Yatra route, where the first group of pilgrims began their journey from both Baltal and Pahalgam base camps this morning.

Dr. Mukhtiar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, said the weather across J&K, including the Yatra axis, is expected to remain hot and humid until July 5.

He said a change is expected from the night of July 5, with a possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall at some locations and light to moderate rainfall in the Kashmir Valley.

He said flash floods, landslides, shooting stones, and mudslides could occur in some areas, especially during the late-night, early-morning, or evening hours. Daytime is expected to remain mostly cloudy with occasional clear intervals, but the risk of weather-related disruptions remains higher outside daylight hours.

He added that the rainfall could bring temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave in the Valley, especially by the morning of July 6.

The shifting weather has prompted heightened attention to conditions along the Amarnath Yatra route. In previous years, fog, rain, and falling debris have led to delays or temporary suspensions of the Yatra.

This year’s Amarnath Yatra began with the first batch of pilgrims moving towards the cave shrine earlier today. Officials said all decisions regarding movement of pilgrims will be based on real-time assessments of weather conditions.

The IMD and local authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation and issuing timely advisories.

Pilgrims and service personnel have been asked to remain alert, especially during vulnerable hours, and follow instructions issued by the administration.(KNS).
