High up on the lush slopes of the Pir Panjal range, where the wind carries whispers of tradition and resilience, a child is born into the nomadic world of the Gujjars and Bakarwals. With no permanent roof above, this newborn still finds a home in the meadows, rivers, and towering mountains that cradle him. He is nurtured by nature, toughened by the terrain, and shaped by the same rugged landscape that has trained generations to endure, to climb, and to live in harmonious isolation from the chaos of the modern world.
The Gujjars and Bakarwals are not merely nomads—they are the custodians of an ancient lifestyle, deeply rooted in culture, simplicity, and an undying spirit. Yet, despite their stoic endurance, they often find themselves on the margins of development, yearning for access to healthcare, education, and employment—necessities which their mobile lifestyle often keeps out of reach.
Recognizing their unique challenges and invaluable role in the socio-economic and security fabric of Jammu and Kashmir, Romeo Force of the Indian Army has stepped forward as a true friend and guardian of this community.
Reinvigorating its longstanding relationship with the Gujjars and Bakarwals, Romeo Force has launched a series of compassionate initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life. Mobile medical camps, a standout initiative, not only cater to the people but also to their livestock—an essential source of livelihood. Army doctors and medical assistants traverse treacherous terrain to reach remote deras, where even a humble “Shukriya” from a grateful young shepherd becomes a reward beyond compare.
The Force’s commitment to empowering youth is evident through skill development programs under the National Skill Development Certification scheme. Training in trades such as welding, plumbing, mobile repair, and IT has opened new pathways for self-reliance. Distribution of essentials like blankets, sleeping bags, and durries during seasonal migrations adds a vital layer of support during the community’s challenging transitions.
Education, a pillar of long-term progress, has not been overlooked. Study material, mobile schools, and travelling educators bring knowledge directly to children in the middle and higher reaches of the region. Coaching sessions are held to help deserving students gain entry into prestigious institutions like Sainik Schools and Army Public Schools. Community halls built by Romeo Force now serve as both transit shelters and makeshift classrooms, reflecting the dual-purpose thoughtfulness of these efforts.
Beyond material support, Romeo Force also fosters cultural pride and community spirit by organizing festivals like the Banj Mela and Ans River Valley Festival, and holding Iftar gatherings—strengthening social bonds while honoring traditions.
