The Sher-e-Kashmir Youth Forum, a grassroots platform of young voices from Jammu & Kashmir, has officially submitted a memorandum to the Hon’ble President of India, appealing for the posthumous conferment of Bharat Ratna to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the towering leader of Kashmir known as Sher-e-Kashmir.
The memorandum outlines Sheikh Abdullah’s decisive role in the accession of Jammu & Kashmir to the Indian Union, his visionary leadership in land reforms, and his lifelong dedication to democracy, secularism, and national integration.
“Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was not just a Kashmiri leader — he was a national figure who shaped the constitutional soul of India. Honoring him with the Bharat Ratna will not only recognize his immense contribution but also send a strong message of unity and healing,” said Amood Gulzar, Chairperson of Sher-e-Kashmir Youth Forum.
The Forum is launching a broader public awareness campaign across India to build support for this national recognition. The appeal is rooted in historical justice and an inclusive vision of India that Sheikh Abdullah passionately championed throughout his life.
Dr. Mehrajuddin, a noted historian and advisor to the Youth Forum, stated:
“In the 75th year of our Republic, it is time to embrace the legacy of leaders like Sheikh Abdullah, who gave political agency to the voiceless and advocated a modern, secular, and democratic Kashmir within the Indian Union.”
The Forum will soon roll out a series of digital campaigns, academic roundtables, and public signature drives in Srinagar, Delhi, and other cities to gather support from all sections of society, including scholars, youth, and political leaders.
