Budgam, November 17, 2024: A team of police officers from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh (UP), today approached Public Prosecutor (PP) Soibugh and arrested Nazir Ahmad Wani, son of Assadullah Wani, from his residence in Hakarmullah, Budgam. The arrest is in connection with ongoing investigations into two long-pending cases.
Wani is implicated in FIR No. 507/1993, which involves charges under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attempted murder and the Explosive Substances Act. Additionally, he is linked to FIR No. 265/1994, which involves charges under sections 467 and 471 of the IPC, related to forgery and document tampering.
The arrest marks a significant development, coming more than three decades after the registration of the two FIRs. Police are currently verifying Wani’s background and the specifics of his involvement in the cases, which have remained unresolved for over 31 years.
On June 17, 1994, the individual threw a grenade at a police team, injuring several officers. In a separate incident that same year, the person forged an identity card under the instructions of Hizbul Mujahideen.
Following the grenade attack, the accused was apprehended and later released on bail. In the case related to the forged identity card, a chargesheet was filed in absentia, leading the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court to issue an arrest warrant against the individual.
The accused is a militant trained in Pakistan and previously ran for a seat in the Budgam Assembly Constituency as a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) assisted the Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh police, who located the individual and transferred him to their custody after following proper legal procedures.
Further investigations are underway.
