A woman in West Bengal’s Howrah allegedly persuaded her husband to sell his kidney for Rs 10 lakh, promising the money would be used for their daughter’s education. However, after the surgery, she allegedly fled with the money and another man, news agency PTI reported quoting police.

According to the complaint, the woman had been pressuring her husband for a year to sell his kidney to improve their financial situation and enroll their 12-year-old daughter in a better school. He agreed, and after the surgery last month, brought the Rs 10 lakh home. His wife then instructed him to rest and recover.

Shortly after, she left the house, taking the Rs 10 lakh and additional cash.

“Then one day she left the house and did not return. I later found the entire amount of Rs 10 lakh in cash along with some more was missing from the almirah,” the man told news agency PTI.

With the help of friends, the family located her in Kolkata, living with a man she had allegedly met on Facebook a year prior and with whom she had been having an affair, the complaint said.

When her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter went to the woman’s residence, she refused to speak with them. Her alleged lover told them she would file for divorce, citing physical and mental abuse from her in-laws during her 16-year marriage.

The man denied the woman taking any money from her in-laws’ home, claiming she only took her own savings.

Police have launched an investigation based on the complaint and video footage of the interaction between the lover and the husband’s family. They plan to question the woman and her alleged lover before taking further action.
