Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said his recent meeting with Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah was cordial and focused on development and governance.

“We have always supported regional governments equally, without any bias,” Shah said in a conversation with Network18. He added that the Centre is committed to working with J&K’s elected leadership.

“We will not let anyone conspire to spread terror in J&K. If anyone tries such things, they will be punished,” the minister warned. Shah said that national security is a top priority for his government. “Security and separatism: on these issues our stand is firm. We will not compromise, nor will we allow anyone else to do it,” he said.

Asked whether a recent terror incident in Kathua was caused by Pakistan-backed infiltration, Shah quipped, “Infiltration is, of course, backed by Pakistan and not someone else like Russia. And this has been happening for years. But our soldiers and the government are both alert, and we will punish them if they try.”

The home minister met top government officials, political leaders, and security brass during his J&K visit this week to assess the current situation in the union territory and devise the future course of action.
