Srinagar MP and senior National Conference leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday sparked fresh debate in political circles by hinting at the possibility of starting a new political platform focused on integrity and responsibility.
Addressing a gathering at Dak Bungalow Sopore, Ruhullah, said, “I am in search of people who will walk alongside me, who will stand up for credibility and work towards establishing accountability in the system.”
Though Ruhullah stopped short of making a formal declaration about a new political party, his remarks and the context of his speech indicated that he may be laying the foundation for an independent political movement, separate from the existing party fold.
Significantly, no representative from National Conference’s Sopore unit was present at the event, fuelling speculation of growing distance between Ruhullah and his party leadership. Locals noted that the programme appeared to have been organised without any involvement of the local NC cadre, adding to the chatter of a possible political realignment.
