Being a citizen, I firmly believe that voting rights are the cornerstone of a thriving democracy. Voting rights are the foundation of democracy, and it empower citizens to have a voice in shaping the future of their nation. India’s journey towards universal suffrage has been a long and arduous one. From the early days of the colonial rule to the post-independence era, the fight for voting rights has been a central part of the country’s democratic evolution. The Indian Constitution, which came into effect in 1950, enshrined the principle of universal adult suffrage, granting all citizens the right to vote regardless of their gender, caste, or economic status. The case of Jammu and Kashmir is particularly intriguing, as we have faced unique challenges in exercising its voting rights. The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has been shaped by complex historical and geopolitical factors, leading to a complex and often contentious relationship with the central government. However, the right to vote remains a fundamental pillar of democracy, and its preservation is important for long-term stability and development.
The Indian Constitution is the bedrock upon which our democratic system is built. It guarantees the right to vote as a fundamental right, ensuring that every citizen has a voice in the political process. This principle is not just a legal construct but a moral and ethical imperative that underpins the very essence of a democratic society. How voting rights empower citizens Voting rights are not just a privilege but a power that citizens wield to shape the future of the nation. When citizens exercise their right to vote, they are not only expressing their individual preferences but also contributing to the collective will of the people. This collective will is the driving force behind the democratic process, ensuring that the government is accountable to the people and that their aspirations are reflected in the policies and decisions that affect their lives.
As we approach the 2024 Parliament Election in Jammu and Kashmir, the issue of voting rights has once again come to the forefront of the political discourse. The key players such as the National Conference, PDP, People’s Conference, Engineer Rasheed, & Altaf Bukhari, have all staked their claims on the importance of safeguarding and promoting voting rights. Despite the constitutional guarantees and the fundamental importance of voting rights, there are ongoing challenges that threaten their integrity and accessibility. Political parties, both at the national and regional levels, have often played a crucial role in either championing or undermining voting rights, depending on their short-term political interests. It is essential to scrutinize the actions and rhetoric of these parties to ensure that they are truly committed to upholding the democratic principles that underpin the right to vote. Here in Jammu & Kashmir some political parties are seeking favors from electoral on the issues which are non-developmental in nature and have potential to generate a sense of alienation among the citizens of the valley. These violations committed by the local political parties need to be checked and control.
